Crispy New Cuts: 11/7/17

November 7, 2017

DJ NHK Guy "BOOT UP"

Seattle’s DJ NHK Guy is putting his own inventive hyperactive spin on the juke/footwork genre, and his latest EDITS collection is another dizzying winner. Hard to pick a fave from the set, especially when there’s hot goofy takes on bona fide classics by Mark Morrison and Jay-Z in there, but I keep going back to this hyped-up flip of Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up.”

Honey Dijon & Tim K feat. Nomi Ruiz "Why"

La di da di da, grooving to this cover of Carly Simon’s timeless 1982 single found on the stellar debut album from the revered Chicago house DJ/producer/icon.

Househead Samira "Slow Down"

Baby slow down, take it easy and get down to this jacking house cut and official debut single from Tunisian DJ/producer Househead Samira. It’s one of six certified dancefloor jams featured on the fresh new Street Bangers Factory #8 compilation just released on London’s Moveltraxx label.

J'Von "Introverts/Grey Beanie"

Seattle’s J’Von quietly dropped his 6-track yellow suit project last month, providing another strong showcase of his colorful blend of synth-enhanced hip-hop and introspective R&B. Get familiar with this low-key video that conveniently pairs two highlights off the release.

poor violet "holy ghosting"

Slovakian label Z Tapes specializes in woozy, emotional, lo-fi bedroom pop, and they just blessed the Fall season with an impressively stacked 27-track compilation from a bunch of waaaaaaaay-under-the-radar artists. It’s all quite solid, but this blurry synthy cut from Melbourne’s poor violet is rising to the top.

Yamaneko "Yaeyama Islands (Setting Sun)"

Getting lost in the clouds to this new one from London’s Yamaneko, a master of floating ambiance and weightless instrumental grime from the compilation Spa Commissions.

Khruangbin "Maria Tambien"

Texas instrumental trio Khruangbin stepped out in late 2015 with their sublime debut album The Universe Smiles Upon You, a perfect late-night cool-out record that will likely sound just as good in 2035 as it did a couple years ago. They’re bringing a touch more bumpin’ exotic funk on the brand new single “Maria También,” the first taste of their forthcoming sophomore album Con Todo El Mundo due out on January 26th, 2018.
