Crispy New Cuts: 12/6/17

Asiatica "Hide In Me"

Asia Lacy quietly unveiled her Asiatica project late last month with “Hide In Me,” a magnetic slice of bluesy soul and lo-fi R&B. It’s really good, we’re stoked to hear more. That goes for any new music from her older bro Steve Lacy, too. Seriously talented family right there.

Break Mode "Banana Cabana"

This is one of 14 sweet tracks found on the new Champ Discs compilation BORCD01 spotlighting “the sound of underground Portland.” Highly recommended.

Mark Renner "Half A Heart"

RVNG Intl. continues to unearth glorious sounds from years past, and next year they’re kicking things off with Few Traces, a stacked collection of scarcely released and unreleased music from the 1980s by rural Maryland native Mark Renner.

Sampa The Great "Black Girl Magik (feat. Nicole Gumbe)"

Australia-based, Zambia-born artist Sampa The Great arrived in late 2015 with The Great Mixtape, serving up a wonderful introduction to her jazzy, soulful, vibrant hip-hop sound. Two years later, she’s now signed to the increasingly eclectic Big Dada label for another stellar release, Birds and the Bee9.

Still Parade "Should Have Known"

The criminally-overlooked project of German musician Niklas Kramer, Still Parade dropped one of my favorite albums last year with his debut album Concrete Vision, a record full of top-shelf dreamy psych-pop gems. Before the year ends, he’s dropping the new Kindness EP and this lead single from the release is more proof that he’s one of the best in the genre.

Subjoi "VIP"

Australian DJ/producer Subjoi has had a prolific 2017, dropping 5 EPs of warm, woozy, lo-fi house grooves. He’s fond of reworking forgotten R&B jams, and he’s whipped up a fresh sped-up take of Ruff Endz’ 2000 single “No More” for his new 4-track EP It’s You.

Virtual Self "Key"

Truth be told, I still reflect fondly on my formative early college years when I was first diving into electronic music and briefly got super into trance. Porter Robinson’s music often takes me back to those days of getting lost in over-the-top sonic euphoria, and his new Virtual Self goes full-blown NEOTRANCE and I’m kinda loving it.
